He said that it was no wonder that his teachers were scratching their heads. Because his reading skills were good, he said that it would not have occurred to his teachers that he was having visual problems. The evaluation with the developmental ophthalmologist took four hours and resulted in our getting a mountain of exercises that we had to do with him at home.

The exercises involved tracking letters in a newspaper, doing dot to dot mazes, reading from materials that were near and far in a rapid manner, and what I call eye aerobics, where he had to look up, down, and all around, over and over again. After about three months of doing this, his tracking was faster, he was no longer reversing his letters, and his handwriting was better. We were so surprised by his improvement that we had him evaluated by another developmental optometrist who, after testing, agreed that his visual convergence and tracking were close to normal.
